WCB GENERAL CHARITIES
Registered Charity No 259928
The
General Charities aims to:
· Provide relief to persons who are in conditions of need, hardship, or distress; and
· Further its broad remit of charitable giving through grants to appropriate groups and organisation.
Applications from Individuals
Applications are accepted from persons who are, have been, or intend to be engaged in the meat or associated trades and their dependents. Due to financial constraints, preference will be given to Freemen of the Butchers Company, their widows, or dependents. In co-operation with the Butchers’ & Drovers’ Charitable Institution (the BDCI), which also provides support to applicants who may be a Master Butcher or Drover or any other person who is or has been connected in any capacity with the Meat Trade applications will invariably be forwarded to the BDCI together with the Committee’s own recommendation for support.
Committee Dates:
The Committee meets on a monthly basis to review individual applications.
How to Apply:
Please send any application in a letter, detailing the individuals connection to the industry and specific need, to the Charities Administrator, Butchers’ Hall, 87 Bartholomew Close, London EC1A 7EB, alternatively you can email ali@butchershall.co.uk If you would like to discuss an application before applying, please contact the Administrator on 020 7600 4106 ext.3, who will be able to offer guidance.
Applications from Groups/Organisations
The WCB Charities Committee has recently reviewed its funding policy and, whilst it continues to have a broad remit and will continue to give emphasis to the Underprivileged and Disadvantaged sections of the community, preference will be given to Charities within the City of London or its adjacent Boroughs. There will, however, be a willingness to consider Charities elsewhere in the UK, subject to available funds.
The essence of the judgement shall be to apply the principle – “Where a Little Means a Lot”. The Committee does not therefore fund groups which it considers have large financial reserves.
Areas of recent funding include:
Elderly Groups
Community Groups
Children
Disability Organisations
Homeless Organisations
Arts Projects

Finsbury Park Homeless Families Project (Islington/Hackney)
The project operates in an area which has a high number of homeless families, mainly living in temporary accommodation which is overcrowded and inadequate. As well as providing practical support to access housing, the project also runs after-school/homework clubs and parenting classes. Happy Days Childrens Charity (London-Wide)
The Charity offers holidays and day trips to children and young people who are suffering from a range of illnesses and disabilities. The grant from WCB will contribute to a holiday or a day trip for a child (and family) who would benefit from the break.
