Education & Awards

Education

Education, Charity and Fellowship are the key principles of The Worshipful Company of Butchers. Education and training within the meat industry has been a major focus and rationale for the Company since its formation. Our strategy is to achieve and maintain a greater focus, coherence and continuity in the projects we fund while communicating appropriately to provide a better understanding and engagement for our strategic education objectives.

Our vision is to inspire all in our industry to learn and grow, from apprentices through to directors and other decision-makers. We aim to encourage opportunities for education at all levels of the industry and ensure the provision of meaningful professional recognition.

Our aim is to position the Worshipful Company of Butchers as having a key strategic role in encouraging and facilitating education at all levels of the industry and in all parts of the ‘meat chain’

The Objectives of the Education Strategy

The objectives of the Education Strategy are to:

  • Ensure the Company raises its profile and influence in the area of industry education. Make the best use of the annual Education Charity budget, avoiding duplication and exploiting synergies with other bodies.
  • Work more closely as a facilitator with other meat industry bodies engaged in education and training. Position the refurbished Butchers’ Hall as a focal point and venue for meat education activities. Establish measurable standards for the effective monitoring and evaluation of all activities.

Other Meat Industry Education Organisations

There are a number of other organisations working in the area of meat industry education and training.

These include notably the Food Training Council (FTC), Institute of Meat (IOM), AHDB Beef and Lamb and AHDB Pork, QMS (e.g. through its skills development activities with Butchers), HCC (Meat Promotion Wales) (through its scholarship programme and further education initiatives), as well as all the Educational Institutions such as Harper Adams University, Reaseheath College, Leeds City College, Meat Ipswich and others.

Many of these institutions have significant staff and funding resources to deploy. It is essential not to duplicate activity and, where possible, to work alongside these organisations.
