What is Eid-al-Adha?
Eid-al-Adha is celebrated in the UK and around the world. Eid-al-Adha, also known as 'Big Eid', is the larger of the two main festivals of the Muslim calendar. Its customs focus on giving and sharing, both within the family, local community and to global causes; remembering the willingness of Abraham to give up his son at God's command.
A central part of Eid celebrations is the thanksgiving festival of Qurbani which involves sheep, goats and cattle. The Qurbani meat is typically shared with friends, neighbours and charities. Families also host celebratory meals where sheepmeat and poultry feature.
As such, Eid is a key seasonal market for the meat industry and farmers alike, whilst year-round Muslim families consume much more meat per household than the general population.
