Annual Glovers’ Inter Livery Croquet Tournament

Published on: 4 August 2026

This month saw the Butchers’ once again take to the Croquet lawns of the Sussex County Croquet Club in Southwick, West Sussex for the annual Glovers’ Inter Livery Croquet Tournament.

Two teams only were entered, such is the demand for places we weren’t able to field our usual three pairs. Tim Stone and Steve Chick were entered in the Inter Livery Cup and Past Master (although less in the sense of croquet) Andrew Parker paired up with Jo Stone in the altogether more demanding and somewhat serious Glovers Cup. The former pair won five out of their six matches coming a very creditable seventh out of twenty four while the latter pair came twelfth in their league. It has to be stated that it is no mean feat to even win a game in the Glover’s Cup as the opposition think nothing of jumping their balls clean over the opposition and through hoops in order to win. Congratulations Andrew and Jo on your win!

I think the funniest moment of the day was when Steve, Tim and myself sat watching Jo and Andrew going first one way then the other across the green with the hoop vaguely in the middle: it was reminiscent of three heads watching a game of tennis! Whether they won the hoop in the end has been lost in time as the getting there was by far the more entertaining! Joking aside, the Livery was once again well represented in what has become a sellout day.

Our thanks go out to the Glovers Company and the Sussex Club for organising such an enjoyable day by the sea.
