Butchers' Swing the Mallet

Published on: 20 June 2022

Once again the Butchers' fielded three pairs for the annual Glovers' Company's Inter Livery Croquet Tournament on Saturday 18 June 2022. Honorary Liveryman and Company photographer, Phil McCarthy, rounded up the team for a beautiful day on the lawn.

Mallets up for the competition!

Former players were joined by former Clerk, Honorary Liveryman Anthony Morrow CVO and the Livery Finance Manager, Alison Gardner this year. Both were newcomers to the tournament but enthusiastic without doubt! With Assistant Tim Stone and his wife Jo, Warden Steve Chick and myself making up the rest of the team, we kept up the Butchers tradition of battling to win!

Held at the beautiful Sussex County Croquet Club on the south coast. Seeing the highest number of entries from twelve Livery Companies, the completion was stiff. So stiff in fact that one pairing failed to win a game but did win two bottles of wine for the wooden spoon, a result in my book! (Not mentioning any names here...). However, we gracefully accepted defeat on occasions and upheld a true appreciation of a thoroughly good day.

Our thanks go to the Glovers' Company and the Sussex Club for all their organisation before the event and on the day.

If you fancy joining the fun next time, just let me know.

Here’s to next year!
