The latest news about and from the Worshipful Company of Butchers

Gold Award Winner 2025 - Alan Bird

Published on: 9 September 2025

The winner of this year’s Gold Award is one of the most quietly spoken and modest liverymen – someone who simply gets things done.

Liveryman Alan Bird joined Two Counties in 2008 to expand their red meat business, and his success quickly spoke for itself. By 2013 he was appointed to the board of directors. In 2016, he was clothed as a Liveryman and immediately threw himself into the life of the Company.

Alan is solid, dependable, reliable, and talented – with a sharp business mind and a gift for organisation. While these qualities may sound understated, they are in fact the hallmarks of a truly great man. They make him, in every sense, a true butcher.

For many years, Alan organised the BDCI Golf Day with remarkable success. In 2023, he embraced a new challenge: leading The Meat Industry Invitational Golf Day on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Butchers.

In doing so, he brought the WCB closer to the heart of the meat industry while also raising significant funds for charitable causes. He managed this without ever burdening others, always working with good humour and quiet determination. The result was the most successful golf day we have ever held—both in terms of fellowship and fundraising. It is now firmly established as a highlight of the Livery calendar and a shining example of fellowship in action.

Alan commands enormous respect across both the industry and the Livery. Few commendations could be greater than this.

Alan Bird – congratulations on being the worthy recipient of the Gold Award 2025.
