New Year, New Charity, New Liverymen

Published on: 25 January 2023

Six new Liverymen, a Gary Baker Award 2022 winner, MRes students from Harper Adams University and a guest from one of our newly selected charities, Farms for City Children joined a full house for the first Court Lunch of 2023.

The Master with our Charity representatives, Tim Rose and Georgie Pedley

It was our annual Charities and Education Lunch and just prior to sitting down to enjoy Steak & Kidney Pudding, with the filling provided courtesy of Assistant, Peter Wright, the Court received updates from MRes students, Liz Tree and Aine Murray and 2022 Nuffield Scholar, Rob Harvard on their studies. Sadly fellow Harper student, Tom Nash couldn’t make it but you can read all about his and the others’ projects, supported by the WCB by clicking here.

They all look set to be future superstars within the meat industry.

Gary Baker Award 2022

Joe Bramall, was presented with this year’s award by Assistant David Baker, which honours the memory of the late Gary Baker. Find out more about the award here.

Joe is in his final year of academic studies as an undergraduate student at Harper Adams University, and took his industrial placement with McDonald’s, working on their beef programme.

New Liverymen

Taking wine with The Master were new Liverymen Geoffrey Buchanan, Matthew Alden, Steven Hall, David Snodgrass, James Wright and Christine Walsh.

Our Guests

In addition to guests from Harper Adams Liveryman, Pamela Brook welcomed the Master of The Plaisterers’ Company, Mr Stephen Gilbert and his Clerk, Colonel Garth Manger OBE RM and Miss Georgie Pedley from Teach First.

Guest speaker, CEO of the Farms for City Children charity, Donna Edmonds was not able to attend but the charity’s Head of Operations, Tim Rose, gamely stepped in with less than 24 hours notice to deliver Donna’s words. The message came through loud and clear that Liverymen are welcome to any of the charity’s 3 farms and the synergy with helping to educate children about how and where their food comes from is a natural fit.

The winners of the 200 Club were Mrs Fiona Wood, Liveryman Stuart Robson and Liveryman Steve Davies (winning for the second consecutive month!). The top prize was £602 so if anyone hasn't signed up, you should definitely consider it. For £20 a ticket each month, it's worth a go.*

The Lunch concluded with a packed Stirrup Cup and an added hour in The Jubilee Arms…although we understand some continued onwards to a hostelry for somewhat longer!

A great start to what we hope will be a happy, healthy and peaceful 2023.
