Tour of Old Bailey

It was a privilege to be hosted yesterday, 31 July, by Liveryman Alderman and Sheriff Gregory Jones KC at the world-renowned Old Bailey – the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales.

As part of a small invited group, Liverymen and guests were granted rare behind-the-scenes access to this historic institution, including the iconic Court No.1. No photos are permitted there, of course – but standing inside that oak-panelled courtroom, where some of the most significant criminal trials in British history have taken place, felt like stepping into a living piece of legal heritage.

Our fellow Liveryman, Sheriff Jones KC, generously shared his insights into the workings of the court and the important role of the Sheriffs in the City of London.

Our official tour guide, Jay Patel, then led us on a fascinating walk through the building, uncovering hidden details and stories that truly brought the Old Bailey to life. He explored the rich and often dramatic history of the site – from its grim origins as Newgate Prison to its present-day role at the heart of the British justice system.

For anyone with an interest in law, history, or the City of London, this is a rare and exceptional opportunity to step behind the imposing doors of the Old Bailey — if you ever get the chance to visit, don’t miss it!
