Lord Mayor’s cup, 15, 16 and 17 May. Report by Bill Jermey

This regatta is open to all City Liveries and has been running for many years.

There were 23 boats entered representing about 18 liveries and it was pretty much perfect sailing weather – much stronger for the afternoon race than forecast, with gusts topping 30 knots!

It wasn’t just about sailing – the fellowship was great with a lasagna meal at the Royal Ocean Yacht Club on Friday evening, then a prizegiving dinner at the even more prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron on Saturday evening. There was a lot of interaction about the event and a lot of trophies on offer.

We had two entries – myself on a Moody 36 “James Myatt” chartered from my sail training charity The Rona Sailing Project, plus john Absolom’s Dufour 405 “First Rule” entered by son Tom as John couldn’t take part this year. Tom’s crew were Alexandra Lefever, Ed Sarchet, the CLYC Commodore Caroline Rodis and Al Mukhida.

My crew consisted of Liverymen Ian Merriman, Chris Godfrey, Christine Walsh plus a friend of Ian’s – Graham Butler. Not an experience racing crew by any means but did very well to finish 6th out of 10 in the longer and windier race.

Tom’s (younger) crew were in a different race to us and when the handicap’s were adjusted they beat us by just 1 point to take the inaugural William Parker Trophy for the first Butchers’ boat! Well done Tom and crew!

We expect to have at least three yachts competing next year – so there will be crew spaces and hopefully more Butchers’ boats!

The William Parker Trophy was presented to Tom Absolom by Michael Mainelli – former Lord Mayor of London and Admiral of the City Livery Yacht Club.

Forthcoming events

Sunsail/Prometheus Sailing Day, including The Master’s Cup, 7 September

Following last year’s success, we invite sailors and non-sailors alike to come along and either book a boat for you and your friends or work colleagues or book a place on a shared boat.

Our final event of the year. Celebrate and recall all things sailing and motorboating whilst enjoying a Carvery lunch.
